“LISTEN” to your body after surgery. Pain is normal and some amount of pain should be tolerated without pain medication if possible. Discomfort (less than pain) should also be recognized, and sometimes it is important to exercise through some discomfort after surgery.
L = do not LIFT anything over 15 lbs for one month
I = INCISION site should be checked daily, you may shower normally after two days. No creams or ointments are necessary and keep the incision open to air
S = SLEEP is very important after your surgery. There is no proper position, so long as you are as comfortable as possible. Braces and collars are not necessary during sleep, unless they allow you to be more comfortable.
T = TALK to your doctor if something does not seem right or if you have pain or weakness out of the ordinary. We are available 24 hours a day to answer your questions
E = EXERCISE: once it’s comfortable, you should start walking, swimming, and using machines in the gym (seated or lying down only). Low impact activities such as swimming, elliptical machines, and stationary bicycles are encouraged, especially after spine surgery.
N = NUTRITION is very important after surgery. Make sure you take an adequate amount of protein as this is important in wound healing. Half of your diet should be fruits and vegetables. Stay away from red meat, processed meats, processed foods, and sugary drinks as much as possible
